Spring is Here

Oh happy day! This morning marked the astronomical beginning of spring!
The vernal equinox occurs on March 20 in 2009, marking the beginning of spring in the northern hemisphere and fall in the southern hemisphere from an astronomical viewpoint. It occurred at 6:44 am CDT.
National Geographic News has an interesting article about the Vernal Equinox including the story of Pope Gregory XIII’s development of the Gregorian calendar to account for an equinox inconvenience.
In honor of today I took some photos on my way home last night as evidence of spring’s arrival along with the following observations.
1. Birds chirping in the pre-dawn darkness
2. Cherry blossoms and pear blossoms on trees
3. That spring smell—soil, rain, pollen, grass
4. Daffodils in various stages of growth—from small green shoots to full blooms
5. Green growth on one bush or tree against a backdrop of bare branches of others
6. Scantily clad undergraduate students in the quad (alongside sane individuals wearing jackets)
