Oh dear… I disappeared for a week and neglected to blog. I went to a conference in Canada and thought that I would manage to post. Silly me. Conferences are a time to work hard during the day and play hard at night. I am recovering from the past week of all-day meetings, walks along the river, and nights spent hang out at the pub. Edmonton is so far north that it was light from 4:30am to 11pm! This made it so easy to lose track of time in the evenings, dining on a far more European timetable—drinks at 6 followed by dinner after 9. I had the opportunity to renew acquaintances with some individuals I haven’t seen in a few years and some whom I typically see once each summer at a conference as well as to make new acquaintances. My presentation received many good reviews. All in all a good week.

Random comment... I went through US Customs before going through security at the airport in Edmonton on the way home. This odd set-up is apparently some special US-Canadian arrangement. (I've never flown to Canada before so it was novel to me.) The customs agent handed my passport back to me while saying "Welcome back." What an awkward statement considering that I was still in Canada.
