Slice of the Pi

The human body functions like a flex-fuel vehicle--a healthy, fiber-full, non-processed food containing diet being gasoline; pizza as the equivalent of E85; and a range of other dietary habits in between. And I seem to run almost entirely on E85 for stretches of time.
Pizza is generally amenable to large groups. And it's my department's favorite way to bribe us to attend functions or work "overtime." We had pizza for a study session Tuesday night. We will have pizza next Tuesday as part of a working lunch. These are plain ordinary pizzas, Domino's or Papa John's. Rarely do we get good pizza.

Friday night a bunch of us went out for pizza after Mass, at a place that Father said was the best pizza in St. Louis. They were able to accommodate a group of 20+ outside on a gorgeous evening. (I think this is because of the Sisters with us.) And it truly was good pizza.

Somewhere in all the pizza consumption, someone mentioned that Obama had declared some other place in St. Louis the best pizza ever and had flown the owner/chef of the restaurant out to the White House for a pizza party. I was shocked by this because typically St. Louis-style pizza has a thin crust reminiscent of matzo and topped with plastic-y provel cheese (and cut into squares). Curiosity got the better of me and a little Googling turned up the news stories... one local one lauding the pizzeria, Pi, (and the obamination's good taste) and several noting Chicago's outrage that Obama had snubbed their deep-dish pizza in favor of St. Louis (another points out how wasteful and environmentally unfriendly this is). All of this over a pizza... it amazes and amuses me. Two things to be grateful for: at least it wasn't St. Louis-style pizza and Obama's favorite pizzeria is not where we went Friday night.
