Stress Point

Despite the title, Stress Point: Thriving Through Your 20s in a Decade of Drama, Sarah Francis Martin is clear that "…this book is not about stress. It is about living life in its entirety with all-out confidence that Jesus is King of Kings and He rightfully declares "Mine!" over all our lives. How about we take these stress points and turn them into a thriving hope-filled journey toward living out the Kingship of Christ?" (12)

The greatest take-home message for me in this book is summed up in a simple quote from fitness guru Jillian Michaels—"…[G]et comfortable with being uncomfortable." (209) I only experience when I step outside my comfort zone. Martin suggests ways to reframe ones thoughts about uncomfortable situations to make it easier to step into those roles, but I think that part of the value of putting oneself in uncomfortable situations is that it makes one stretch. Over time, these experiences lead to lasting growth, or at least increased self-knowledge.

It is a decent book for one seeking guidance, assurance, or grounding during turbulent times during her twenties. I am almost done with this decade of my life and know that there are many times that I have needed someone to help point me in the right direction or to assure me that I am headed in the right direction. This book is a good resource for someone who does not know where else to turn. For those who wish to take this journey as a group, Martin includes a "Stress Point survival group leader guide" at the end of the book.
