Hobbling along

Crutches ensure that I cannot sneak up on anyone, and I cannot get around as fast as I’m used to. Nor can I carry anything more than a small item like a piece of paper. *sigh* But I have become considerably more adroit after nearly two weeks of tooling around on them. Stairs are no longer a terrible threat, but I think that most toddlers could beat me up the steps to my home.

My trip to the Emergency Department culminated with the edict from the ortho resident that I was to be entirely non-weight bearing on my foot until cleared by the outpatient orthopedic clinic. Hence, “the boot” and crutches.

One of the nurses came in with the CAM boot and its many layers of heavy duty Velcro. After nestling my foot in this very cushy but heavy boot, she left to get me crutches. After a few minutes another nurse poked her head in to the room and asked me how tall I am. My answer was followed by her saying “darn” and walking away. Eventually, she came back with crutches. Apparently I they did not have any crutches that were short enough for me, so they sent someone over to the neighboring children’s hospital to get me a pair.
Oh my! I know I’m short, but this was comical. It was nice to have something to laugh about at the end of a wearisome afternoon/evening.

Anyways… Since the crutches are my constant companions for a few weeks, I decided to have a little fun with them. I think that the leopard print is silly, but a friend called it sexy. Either way, I like ‘em. Someone suggested that I need little paws to put on the tips. I think that we need to spend some time considering the logistics of that idea before implementing it.
